A Musical Delight
We were so fortunate to be able to
attend some of the events organized
for the JCC MusicFest. My heartfelt
appreciation for bringing Noa to us
("Israeli Performer 'Breathes' Song:'
March 1, page 44).
I was fortunate enough to have been
able to see her in Jerusalem in 1995.
She and Gil Dor were so unbelievable
on Saturday night, March 17. It was a
most enchanting evening. Again, thank
you so much for having MusicFest. It is
a real plum for the Jewish community.

This Month In History:
Jewish Civil Rights
March 26,1381: King Charles VI
of France signed an ordinance
exempting Jews from the obliga-
tion to replace stolen pledges
after anti-Jewish riots in Paris
and other towns. At the time,
Charles was only 13 years old, and
the ordinance was the work of
his regent, Louis of Anjou. When
Charles himself assumed con-
trol, the official attitude changed
and the civil rights of Jews
were restricted. In 1394, Charles
expelled the Jews from France.
March 30, 1526: Emperor Charles
V of Spain issued a general
safe-conduct to the Portuguese
"New Christians" in Antwerp,
Belgium. Numerous Marranos

(Jews who nominally converted
to Catholicism to avoid perse-
cution) were allowed to settle
there and engage in business.
Wealthy Marranos, such as the
Mendes family, used the Spanish
Netherlands for transit to Muslim
countries. However, toward the
mid-16th century, it was decided to
expel from Antwerp all Marranos
who had arrived there before
1543. The edict was renewed in
1550 and most of the Marranos
were forced to leave, although
a group of families continued to
reside in Antwerp without rights
of domicile. After the Peace of
Westphalia (1648), Marranos were
able to resettle in Antwerp, and
they even established a modest
place of worship there.
