"When you're comparing schools, consider the ATMOSPHERE, from
the hallways to the classrooms. Look to where ALL STUDENTS are
HAPPY and ENGAGED both intellectually and physically in
their learning, where DIVERSITY is celebrated, where
TEACHERS are WARM and WELCOMING, where
PRINCIPALS are INVITING and RECEPTIVE,
where PARENTS demonstrate
SATISFACTION that EVERY
CHILD is CHERISHED in a
SAFE, NURTURING setting."

March Madness!

hree years ago, the Frankel
Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit needed
to go to court to give its baseball team
a chance to play for a Michigan High
School Athletic Association district
championship. This year, all it took
was a trip to the basketball court.
Even though the Academy boys bas-
ketballers lost 53-27 to Waterford Our
Lady of the Lakes in their first-ever dis-
trict title game Saturday night, March
10, just playing the game was a victory
of sorts for the West Bloomfield school.
Upset wins over Novi Franklin Road
Christian on March 6 and Detroit
Urban Lutheran on March 8 earned the
Academy a berth in the championship
game of the Class D district hosted by
Franklin Road Christian. The game was
scheduled for 7 p.m. March 9, but it
was moved to 8:30 p.m. March 10, after
Shabbat, to accommodate the Academy.
Franklin Road Christian couldn't
host the game because of a previously
scheduled seminar in its gym, so Our
Lady of the Lakes agreed to be the
host because its gym was available.
"Everyone accommodated us
because nobody wanted to go to court.
We thank them for that," said Academy
athletic director and assistant basket-
ball coach Michael Sandweiss. "All
we want is an opportunity to partici-
pate in MHSAA tournaments without
compromising our beliefs. This shows
that is possible'
The Academy needed a court order
from Oakland County Circuit Court
Judge Rae Lee Chabot to play a 2004
district championship baseball game
against host Southfield Christian on
a rain date instead of a Saturday. The
MHSAA revoked the Academy's asso-
ciation membership that fall, claiming
it didn't want to give preferential treat-
ment to one school, but Chabot issued
another court order that reinstated the
Academy.
Sandweiss said the Academy had a
great crowd at the March 10 basketball
game. "There were a few hundred-plus
students, parents, alumni and com-
munity members there supporting us.
We had as many or more fans than
Lakes," Sandweiss said. "Lakes play-
ers are more used to big-time games,

and it showed. This was an unfamiliar
stage for us. But we had a great run
while it lasted."
The Academy's 39-35 victory over
Urban Lutheran in the district semi-
finals avenged two losses in Catholic
League CD Division play earlier in
the season. Urban Lutheran beat the
Academy 63-36 Jan. 11 and 56-41 Feb.
20. Noah Curhan's 23 points led
Coach Andy Herold's Jaguars to the
surprise win over Urban Lutheran and
a shot at the first district champion-
ship in the team's five-year history.
Besides Curhan, the other play-
ers on the Academy roster were
C.J. Apel, Josh Chomet, Max
Eisenberg, Aaron Goss, Matanya
Kidron, Aric Klar, Michael
Kuper, Ari Kurzmann, Matt
Kurzmann, Alex Orman, Adam
Perlow, Ryan Rosen and Basil
Williams. The Jaguars finished 9-13.

Abbott!

talented so we're working on more
advanced skills," Gold said. 11
