When One Door Closes ... 63

Examining the Fired experience.

Something called the
National Standards for
Diabetes Self-Management Educa-
tion (DSME) has been developed
to help diabetics gain control of
their illness.

Ideally, a qualified team of diabet-
ics educators (including a
registered dietitian) manage
the individual diabetic's
self-education—utiliz-
ing individualized initial
, assessment, curriculum
7 planning, and follow-up
) periodic assessments.

An individualized,
written self-education
curriculum can be devel-
oped from the following
recommended topics:
• The diabetes disease process;
• Incorporating physical activity;
• Utilizing medications;
• Monitoring blood and urine;
• Reducing the risk of complica-
tions and dealing with acute
complications;
• Goal setting;
• Psychosocial adjustments; and
• Pregnancy-related management.
