Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis

grandfather, both revered rabbis,
she dedicated her life to sharing
the teaching of the Torah and
Judaism.
In 1973, she founded Hineni
International, a New York-based
Torah study center. Her mission
is to fight the "spiritual Holocaust
among Jews in the U.S. and around
the world." She has spread her mes-
sage about Torah and Jewish heri-
tage through books, lectures and
TV appearances.
She sees the Torah as a manual
for life. Referring to the Torah and
quoting the Talmud, she told the
group in Ann Arbor: "Turn it over;
turn it over; for everything is con-
tained therein."
As she ended her talk, she issued
a rebuke to the audience made
tolerable because it came from her
heart.
"The Jewish people is eternal,
that's a promise from God:' she
said.
"But do we have to have another
Holocaust first? I don't want anoth-
er Holocaust museum! I want a
Jewish people! What good are fans
if there is no team?
"You are Jews. Never forget that.
Learn what that means. Live as a
Jew. Just one more page of Torah
learning ... one more mitzvah
... just one more act of chesed
[kindness]! We can create a turn-
about! And God will respond with
miracles!"
U-M student Zachary Goodwin,
21, of Farmington Hills said, "It
was truly amazing, an eye-opening
experience. She is living proof that
something extremely positive can
come from even the most horrible
circumstances. What matters is
how you respond. You can become
bitter or wise. She chose the latter;
it's evident in her words." Ill
