sther Jungreis — noted
author, lecturer and
TV personality — was
delayed arriving in Detroit because
of a canceled flight. Had she given
up and gone home, it would have
been understood and forgiven. But
resignation is not in her repertoire.
This is a woman on a mission.
Speaking in Ann Arbor on March
6, she said: "Life is a test:' which
happens to be the title of her latest
book. "But, why should God have to
test us? After all, He knows us bet-
ter than we know ourselves."
Therein lies the key to the
answer.She first expained that we
each have an unique mission to
accomplish in this world. Then she
said, "If you are looking for gold, for
treasure, for diamonds, what do you
need to do? They are not lying, pol-
ished and ready, on the street just to
pick up. You need to search, to dig.
You need to work hard; God knows
your treasures; He planted them
within your soul, but you must
come to know yourself."
Jungreis spoke at the Michigan
League at the University of
Michigan to about 100 people — a
mix of students and members of
the Southfield-Oak Park Jewish
community. The event was present-
ed by Jewish Awareness America
(JAAM), which is run out of Ann
Arbor's Jewish Resource Center, in
conjunction with Eternal Jewish
Family. Both are Orthodox organi-
zations.
Jungreis, who says her lineage
can be traced to King David, spent
her childhood in the Bergen-
Belsen concentration camp. Rather
