Lebanon. I traveled there on my
American passport and needed a
visa to go," he says.
Of Israel and Jews, he says: "They
are good people and have the right
to exist like all other people. We are
all human; we all live. They suffered
for a long time and need to stabi-
lize their state and live in peace for
their people."

Community Support
Saleh says local rabbis and Jewish
professionals have understood his
situation and given him support,
but the La Shish name remained a
problem. Some of his previous cus-
tomers would order carryout but
not eat in the restaurant.
Dr. Richard Mark of West
Bloomfield says Saleh is a "phe-
nomenal restaurateur" and was to
be one of his partners in the pur-
chase of La Shish.
"He's a terrific human being and
as American as anyone else," Mark
said of Saleh. "We live in a melting
pot here in the U.S. and you can't
hold him responsible for all of the
problems going on out there."
Bill Braun of Farmington Hills
met Saleh in the late 1990s and
they have been friends ever since.
He has done marketing and public
relations for Saleh since Braun
retired from his direct-mail adver-
tising business. Active with B'nai
B'rith Great Lakes Region, Braun
says Saleh had fundraisers for the
organization at his restaurants
and has always been supportive of
Jewish organizations that came his
way. "I have the utmost respect for
Sam," Braun says. "If people want to
hold La Shish against him, that is
their prerogative; but Sam is a good
guy and deserves better."
