ELLIOT LUBY, M.D.

Age: 82
Background: Graduated Detroit
Central High School, the University
of Chicago and Washington
University (St. Louis) School of
Medicine; internship at Detroit
Receiving Hospital; residency
in psychiatry at the Menninger
Foundation and Yale University.
Returned to Detroit in 1954, joining
the Lafayette Clinic where he was
director of clinical services. Served
as chief of psychiatry at Harper
Hospital, director of residency and
taught a course on psychiatry and
the law at the WSU Law School.
Opened Comprehensive Psychiatric
Services in 1972 in Southfield, now
located in Farmington Hills.
Resides: Franklin
Family: Married to Ideane, a former
teacher whom he calls a "quintes-
sential mother." She keeps the
books for his practice. They have
three children: Arthur Luby, 53, a
lawyer in Washington, D.C., who is
associate director of representation
for the Airline Pilots Association;
Howard Luby, 51, a Birmingham resi-
dent who is owner of Mediascape
Corporation, a Southfield software
engineering firm; Joan Luby, 48,
associate professor of psychiatry
at Washington University School of
Medicine, founder and director of
its Early Emotional Development
Program and director of residency
training in child psychiatry. All
are married. The Lubys have four
grandchildren, ranging in age from
22 to 13.
Outside interests: Walks 20 miles
a week. Belongs to Temple Beth El,
Bloomfield Township.

MANUEL TANCER, M.D.

Age: 48
Background: Graduated Princeton
University and University of Arizona
College of Medicine; psychiatry
internship at UA; residency at
North Carolina Memorial Hospital/
University of North Carolina
School of Medicine; fellowship in
anxiety and affective disorders,
National Institute of Mental Health;
four years on the faculty, UNC
at Chapel Hill. In 1994, moved to
Detroit to practice psychiatry and
direct research at Allen Park/
Detroit Veterans' Administration
Hospital and join WSU School of
Medicine faculty. Named chair of
the Department of Psychiatry and
Behavioral Neuroscience at the
WSU School of Medicine and psy-
chiatrist-in-chief for the Detroit
Medical Center in 2003 and is pres-
ident and chief executive officer of
University Psychiatric Centers.
Resides: Grosse Pointe
Family: Married to Claire Stroker,
child psychiatry resident at WSU,
whom he met on a psychiatric inpa-
tient unit in Tucson 24 years ago.
They have two daughters, Emily, 21,
a junior majoring in law, letters and
society at the University of Chicago,
and Stephanie,16, a student at
University Liggett School, Grosse
Pointe Woods.
Outside interests: Plays racquets
(an 18th century game) and squash
(a 19th century offshoot of rac-
quets) at Detroit Racquets Club
and the Detroit Athletic Club. The
Tancers are affiliated with the
Grosse Pointe Jewish Council.
