The Lester J. Morris Hillel Jewish Student Center at
Michigan State University invites you to join us at our
Annual Tribute Gala
"Inspiring Future Jewish Leaders"
The War Collection
Recently, the Franklin Archives
hosted an exhibit at Temple Beth El
displaying rare photographs, uni-
forms and documents showing how
congregants supported the soldiers.
Irving Katz has writings on the early
fur traders and the Civil War.
Included are the letters of World
War II-era service personnel written
to Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer (1941-
1952). Rabbi Richard C. Hertz, who
followed Rabbi Glazer, was a World
War II chaplain, who counseled
returning soldiers and provided
helpful writings on how these young
men could best re-acclimate to life
at home.
The marriage license and war
collections are frequently accessed
by researchers and scholars.
Community members most often
request cemetery records, family
collections and the congregational
records.
"My job is to help guide some-
one through this giant puzzle': said
Durecki. "We ask a lot of questions
because the information someone
is seeking is not always in the most
obvious place. Inevitably, when a
congregant or community member
comes in to do research, together we
make new discoveries"

Lecture
At 7 p.m. on March 26, in
honor of its 25th anniversary,
the Leo M. Franklin Archives
at Temple Beth El will present
the Jewish History Detective
Series' inaugural lecture,
"Cherokee Tribe Number One
— the Improved Order of Red
Men (IORM)."
In 1916, Detroit was home
to the still-viable frater-
nal society's first and only
Jewish tribe. None of the 87
Jewish members was Native
American. But the objective
was benevolence and charity,
care for widows and orphans,
and friendly relations among
men. Speaker will be archivist
Jan Durecki.
