well when you only want someone to
do the leg work. An event planner can
also be a full project manager, manag-
ing everything from budgeting to on-site
supervision."

Generally speaking, the larger event the more lead time it takes to
plan. Once the initial plans are made, the planner's goal is to ensure
that everyone is on the same page. For instance, vendors should
have a general idea of the overall event schedule and be clear about
what's expected of them and when.
"A good event planner becomes the event coordinator for the cli-
ent as well as for the vendors," says Patty Paterni, catering director
of Quality Kosher Catering in Southfield. "They have the answers we
need to know. If the event planner isn't great at what they do, they
tend to blame the vendors. The best event planners see a problem
and handle it so the host never knows it ever happened."
