"One of the most important tasks of a professional planning a

wedding is to relieve as much stress as possible for the bride and
her family while still making the family feel they are in control of the
event," says 25-year veteran planner Janice Cherkasky of Gourmet
Parties, Inc. in Franklin. "That means being sensitive to a budget, pri-
oritizing what needs more or less attention, sometimes reining in a
new idea but always keeping the client's expectations in the forefront."
"A good client for me'," says Cherkasky, "is someone who is not
controlling and doesn't micro-manage so that we can rely on the
expertise of the professional vendors to do what they do best. A good
event planner knows all the questions everyone else forgets to ask."
Event planners acquire some basic psychology skills during their
careers. They are also good at mediating and arbitrating.

An event planner should have a list of questions or a
process for getting to your dream event.

• Does the event planner have good relationships with
vendors in your area? Good relationships may mean
significant discounts.

• Will the planner help you with all aspects or just on
the day of the event? Let them know what you expect and
which parts you want to be involved with personally.

• Can you communicate easily with the planner?
Can they accommodate your tastes and preferences?
