Kiddush, our first tradition is
touching each other's cup, no
matter how many people are
around the table, before drink-
ing the wine.
The other one is a bit
strange. After saying the
HaMotzi over the challah and 4
Atilt
Shelly Kapen and his granddaughter
giving a piece to each one at
Kayla, 10
the table, my husband, Shelly,
takes the piece designated for
our first grandchild, 10-year-old Kayla, who sits to his right, and cuts it
with his hands into 10 pieces, counting each piece in Hebrew, Yiddish,
Arabic or any other language he can count in. We never know which will
be the designated language and it's always a lot of fun, especially to
Kayla. This is a unique tradition in our family, which I'll bet no one else
has.

— Rachel Kapen, West Bloomfield, who has two sons and six grandchildren
