The first, brokered by then-
Federation President Mark Schlussel,
allowed Congregation B'nai Moshe
to move from its home at 10 Mile
and Church and begin construction
of its new facility on Drake Road in
West Bloomfield. Federation gave the
building to Yeshiva Beth Yehudah as
a new home for its Beth Jacob girls'
school. The yeshivah was responsible
for remodeling the building and UJF
retains ownership of the land.
Federation got involved after B'nai
Moshe received a bid from a church
group for the Oak Park building.
Selling the building to a church, it
was believed, would undo the work of
Federation's Neighborhood Project.

The project had been created to stabi-
lize and reinforce the Jewish presence
in Oak Park and Southfield with inter-
est-free loans to Jews for downpay-
ments for home purchases.
In the last 15 years, UJF entered
into similar agreements that allowed
Congregation Beth Achim to merge
with Adat Shalom Synagogue, followed
by Yeshivat Akiva taking over the Beth
Achim facility on 12 Mile Road in
Southfield. Another deal gave Yeshivat
Darchei Torah a new home in the for-
mer United Hebrew Schools building
two blocks west of Akiva.
Both schools were responsible for
the renovations at their new cam-
puses.

You can look at it two ways, Either we're giving you one
complete pair of eyeglasses free, or two complete pair at half-
off. Whichever makes you happy. Choose from a big selection
of single vision plastic, standard D-28 lined bifocals, 7 x 28 lined
tri-focals, and our progressive, no-line bifocals. All with UV and
scratch protection! Sorry, no insurance
or discount plans for this
event. But with a free
pair of complete
glasses, that's
not so bad.

A Bit Of History

Many areas of Oak Park west of Coolidge Highway were swampland
before the area began to build up in the decade after World War II.
The southeastern end of Temple Emanu-El's property at 10 Mile and
Church streets had a house for many years. For a time in the 19805, the
house was used for Jewish youth activities before it was torn down.
An area north of the home, at the eastern end of the Emanu-El park-
ing lot, was a poorly maintained auxiliary parking area for High Holiday
overflow from B'nai Moshe and Emanu-El. The low, broken pavement
often retains water after a rain.
For years, B'nai
Moshe's sexton,
the late Shalom
Ralph, would regu-
larly collect rolls
and bread after
congregational
events and give
it to the sea gulls
and pigeons that
gathered in the

area. Many birds
still congregate
there, but this may change after the sale of the land to United Jewish
Foundation.
Emanu-El members told the Jewish News that UJF is expected to deal
with the standing water problem on the property as well as remove the
diseased ash trees that have died in recent years.
