TV Industry Honors

T

hree members of the Jewish
community earned high hon-
ors from the Michigan Chapter
of the National Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences at its annual dinner
Feb. 25.
Sidney and
Naomi Siegel
of Bloomfield
Hills received the
group's first Gold
Circle Award,
given for more
than 50 years of
excellence in the
television industry.

Henry Baskin,
a Birmingham-
based attorney specializing in entertain-

a Silver Circle Award, signaling more
than 25 years of significant contribu-

The Siegels are pioneers in TV. She
was one of the first woman writers,
cinematographers and producers; he
was one of Detroit's first TV cinema-
tographer/videographers. Together they
formed Telespot Productions in the

1950s, serving local and network TV,
major companies, sports syndicates and
new businesses. They have won many
major awards.
Married 63 years, the Siegels belong
to Sholem Aleichem Institute, have
videotaped the West Bloomfield-based
Jewish Ensemble Theatre perfor-
mances for five years, done videography
for the Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology and the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit, and recently
donated nearly 67,000 feet of archival
film with Jewish content to Federation.
On-camera, Baskin hosted "Due
Process" on WDIV-TV4, one of Detroit's
longest-running public affairs pro-
grams; off-camera, as an entertainment
attorney, he represents a large percent-
age of the area's on-air talent. Early
on, he represented Marvin Gaye, the
Temptations and the Rolling Stones.
He also has authored Michigan's Child
Custody Act, is responsible for the cre-
ation of Michigan's personal protection
orders and has received the State Bar of
Michigan's "Champion of Justice" Award.
Baskin serves as chairman of Oakland
University's governing board, where

Naomi and Sidney Siegel

he also established the Baskin Family
Foundation, providing need-based
scholarships to students of single-par-
ent families and support for the College
of Arts and Science's Judaic studies
program.
