In honor of Purim, "Way off the Borscht
Belt Improv Comedy Weekend" will be
hosted by the Birmingham-Bloomfield
Chai Center March 2-4 at the Masonic
Lodge, 37357 Woodward, Bloomfield
Township.
Comedian Reuven Russell and his wife,
off-Broadway actress Esther Rachel, will
entertain. Reuven's stand-up comic act
will be featured Saturday night, March 3,
and an interactive comedy improvisation-
al experience will be led by both Russells
on Sunday, March 4.
Esther Rachel will also give a talk,
"From Hollywood, to the Himalayas, to
Home — One Woman's Journey to Jewish
Spirituality," on Friday night, March 2.

A graduate of the Yale School of
Drama, Reuven is the son of Borscht Belt
humorist Joey Russell. Along with the
stand-up comedy, he has extensive act-
ing experience in theater, television, and
film, including a popular one-act show.
He is currently the director of the Theater
Program at Stern College in New York
City.
Esther Rachel is also on the faculty at
Stern, where she teaches screenwriting.
In addition, she writes feature articles for
Jewish publications and makes documen-
tary videos on social issues.

Recycling Fundraiser
Congregation Beth Shalom's Religious
School Parents (RSP) are helping the
environment and raising money for the
religious school by participating in the
Staples Recycle for Education program.
Ink or toner cartridges brought to the
synagogue will be recycled. For informa-

Adat Shalom Purim
Adat Shalom Synagogue's Purim celebra-
tion begins 6:15 p.m. Saturday, March 3.
There will be a "Make Your Own Veggie
Taco" dinner, followed by story time for
young revelers, Havdalah and a traditional
Megillah reading by Adat Shalom teens:
Noga Barpal, Natalie Blum, Hannah
Graff, Victoria Greenstein, Brandon
Kappy, Emily Phillips and Hannah Posen.
A magician and a hypnotist will
provide entertainment, along with
hamantashen and ice cream.
At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 4, nursery
and kindergarteners will see a mini-
Megillah by Adat Shalom clergy, followed
by face painting, making puppets and
assembling mishloach manot baskets.
The Adat Shalom Sisterhood will hold
its annual Sonia Knopper Purim Outreach
Luncheon on Wednesday, March 7, host-
ing JVS, Kadima and JARC clients.
The congregation will hold its annual
Purim Party Plus fundraiser Saturday
evening, March 10. It will feature a buffet
supper, dancing to Nouveaute and prizes.

Daddy-Daughter Dance
The Menis Club of Adat Shalom will hold
its third annual Daddy-Daughter Dinner
Dance 5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, for
daughters ages 3-13 and their dads and
granddads.
The evening includes dancing, pizza
and a commemorative photo, and com-
plimentary boutonnieres and corsages for
pre-registered participants.
Cost is $9 per person paid in advance
or $12 at the door. Chairing the program
is David Strauss of Farmington Hills.

SYNergy Shabbat
Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz will headline the
March 9-10 SYNergy Shabbat Weekend at
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Rabbi Berkowitz is the senior rabbinic
fellow in the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America's Kollot: Voices of Learning pro-
gram. An accomplished artist and sofer, he
was formally trained in Jerusalem and has
completed the writing of Megillat Esther,
the illumination of several ketubbot, and
a limited edition artist portfolio entitled
Passover Landscapes: Illuminations on the
Exodus, which was recently exhibited at
the Yeshiva University
Museum.
SYNergy activities
will begin at 5:45 p.m.
Friday, March 9, with
Shabbat Shaboom, a
musical service for
families with children
through second grade.

A Shabbat Rocks
Kabbalat Shabbat
Service begins at 6 p.m., followed by a
casual Shabbat buffet supper. There will
be child care, and a magic show by Eugene
Clark. Dinner reservations are required.
Rabbi Berkowitz will speak following
dinner about his Passover Landscapes. He
will deliver the Saturday morning sermon
and discuss "Rembrandt & the Rabbis" fol-
lowing Kiddush.
Shabbat morning begin with 8:30 a.m.
Talmud study with Rabbi Daniel Nevins,
9 a.m. traditional services and 9:30 a.m.
shtiebl minyan.
Drop-off youth services are at 10:15 a.m.
and Yoga & Yiddishkeit (wear yoga attire)
is at 10:30.
