MISSION STATEMENT
Platinum is a monthly, glossy life-
style magazine published by the
Detroit Jewish News. It reflects
all aspects of life in the Metro
Detroit Jewish community, includ-
ing decor, fashion, food, health,
spirituality, books, shopping and
more. Whether profiling a unique
member of our community or the
latest hot spot or trend you should
know about, Platinum's got it cov-
ered. Our goal is to be a part of
the fabric of the Jewish commu-
nity and to reflect those who have
created it — our readers.
FOR CENTURIES, a girl's wedding day has been among the most special in her life. When
my grandmother, the then-20-year-old Sarah Rabinowitz, married her beloved Ben Schwartz
on April 8, 1925, it was in the home of a favorite uncle and aunt. My mother — who has no
photos of the occasion, but has her father's tux stored neatly in the basement — remembers my
grandmother speaking fondly of the beautiful party the aunt made for the couple. They honey-
mooned in Niagara Falls.
One of my mother's closest friends, Beverly Miller, is so tickled speaking of her mother's
wedding, she seems almost to remember being there. In a sleeveless, pearl-encrusted silk gown
with a sweeping train and cloche hat and veil, Irene Federman married Irwin Schubiner in
December of 1926 at Detroit's magnificent Venetian-style Book-Cadillac Hotel soon after it
opened. Her sister and her husband were married days before, as were her husband's brother and
his wife, and the three couples embarked on a three-month rail journey across the United States.
Beverly, who has a picture of her mother "riding an ostrich someplace," adds that "they would
have stayed longer but my mother became pregnant!"
Today, we still become giddy at the thought of our wedding. Of our dress. Of our hair and
makeup and jewelry. Oh — and our husbands. And this issue of Platinum celebrates all that is
wonderful about weddings. In this month's "Faces" (page 8), columnist Robin Schwartz visited
a fete at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit in celebration of its current
bridal exhibit. In "Platinum Profile" on page 16, we open the doors to two local jewelers — one
focusing on antiques, the other contemporary items — who offer exquisite pieces to add extra
sparkle to your special day. For a peek inside the recent luxuriously detailed wedding of Tracy
and Gabe Rubin, stunningly photographed by Laurie Tennent, see "Love Story" on page 23.
And for a little inspiration when choosing your own wedding "trimmings," check out "All The
Pretty Pieces" (page 29), where we've rounded up our favorite shoes, veils, cake and more.
Lastly, learn about a new product created by local photographers that provides an alternative
to the tried-and-true wedding album ("The Goods," page 20). Because your wedding day is not
