SIDNEY E. LOCKE, age 88, of San
Diego, formerly of Detroit, died Feb. 16,
2007. Mr. Locke was in the steel busi-
ness. An engineer in the Army Air Corps
during World War II, he was active with
Adat Shalom Synagogue in Michigan and
also Ner Tamid in California and Kehillas
Torah.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years,
Shirley Locke of San Diego; son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Bruce Locke and
Nancy Sway; daughter and son-in-law,
Denise and Dr. Phillip Levy; grandchil-
dren, Alexandra and Dave Smith, Erica
and David Levesque, Emily Joyce Levy,
Tamara and Ric Anderson; great-grand-
children, Adam Samuel Katz, Evan Jacob
Katz, Danielle Maxine Katz, Maxine
Mirielle Levesque, Michael Paul Levesque,
Lillian Rose Levesque; brother-in-law,
Julius Stross.; nieces and nephews, Carol
and Skip Roberts, Dr. Jeoffiey and Ellen
Stross, Roger Bruce Hyman, Dr. Andrea
and Dr. Robert Kaplan, Terri and Rick
Birndorf, Lori and Henry Vecchioni, David
Fishman.
Mr. Locke was the beloved son of the
late Reva and the late Morris Fishman; the
dear brother of the late Molly Stross, the
late Goldie Hyman, the late Theodore H.
Fishman; the cherished brother-in-law of
the late Barney Hyman, the late Jocelyn
and the late Darwin Canvasser, the late
Eugene Daniel Galin; the devoted son-in-

law of the late Marian and the late David
Galin.
Interment at Adat Shalom Memorial

JANET D. LYNN, age 88, of West
Bloomfield, formerly of New York, died
Feb. 13, 2007. A founding member of
Temple Kol Ami, Ms. Lynn was a politi-
cal activist and was very active in West
Bloomfield Township development.
She received a bachelor's degree in
political science from Barnard College in
New York and a master's degree in politi-
cal science from Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore, Md.
Ms. Lynn was the founder of CLURE,
Citizen's Council for Land Use Research
and Education. She received the
Governor's Award for Planning in the
1970s.
She is survived by her children, Dr.
David H. Lynn Jr. and Dr. Wendy Singer
of Gambier, Ohio, Dr. Debora G. Lynn and
Sander Lederman of Canton, Mass., Dr.
Thomas J. Lynn and Jessica Hirsch-Lynn
of Philadelphia, Pa., and Claudia V. Lynn-
Haluska and David Haluska of Wixom;
grandchildren, Amanda Lederman, Aaron
Lynn, Jeremy Lynn, Elizabeth Lynn and
Jonah Lynn. Janet was the beloved sister of

ELEANOR S. MANELA, 77, of Miami,
Fla., formerly of Detroit, died Feb. 12,
2007. Mrs. Manela was a very loving and
devoted mother and grandmother who
always put her children first. She has been
residing in Florida for the last three years
at the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital.
She is survived by her children,
Debbie and Barry Hurwitz of Miami,
Sheldon Manela of Farmington Hills,
Bob and Betsy Manela of Coral Springs,
Fla., Howard and Liz Manela of West
Bloomfield; brother and sister-in-law,
Maurice and Bernice Betman of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren, Joseph, Adam,
William, Joshua, Hannah, Zachary, Jemma,
Jonah; nieces and nephews; great-nieces
and great-nephews. Eleanor was the
beloved wife of the late Joseph Manela,
who died in 1977.

PORTNOFF, age 85,
of Illinois, formerly
of Detroit, died Feb.
14, 2007. A secretary
for the Wayne County
Prosecuter's Office for
many years, she was a
Portnoff
member of B'nai B'rith.
She is survived by
her daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret
and Rick Suminski and Patti and Michael
Jablo; grandchildren, Robin and Penny
Carney and Paul Jablo; sister, Edith West.
Mrs. Portnoff was the beloved wife of the
late Bert Portnoff and the dear sister of
the late Anna Pure.

She was a unique actress who went from
the Yiddish stage in her native Detroit to
the New York stage; to theater, TV and
films in Chicago.

and an active AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio
Players member. Active member of
Na'Amat-Rishonah Chapter. An accom-
plished pianist who was a staunch mem-
ber of Hashomer Hatzair, attended Yiddish
shule and Farband programs and gradu-
ated from Wayne Sate University.

SYLVIA ZELMA
SACHS, 92, of
Southfield, died Feb. 18,
2007.
Mrs. Sachs was an
assistant bookkeeper
and a member of the
Jewish War Veterans
Sachs
Auxiliary, Congregation
Beth Ahm and the
Birmingham Stroke Club.
She was a loving and devoted caregiver
during the decade-long illness of her
husband, Frank.
Mrs. Sachs is survived by sons, Dr.
Ralph Sachs of Detroit and David Sachs
of Southfield; many loving nieces, neph-
ews and extended family.
Mrs. Sachs was the beloved wife of the
late Frank Sachs; the devoted mother
of the late Alan Sachs; the dear mother-
in-law of the late Pat Milner Sachs; the
loving sister and sister-in-law of the late
Abraham and the late Sarah Friedman,
the late Jack and the late Edith Friedman,
the late Adele and the late Eli Bookman,
the late Martha and the late Dr. Louis
Goodman.
She was the dear sister-in-law of the
late David Sachs, the late Nathan and the
late Alice Sachs, the late Benjamin and
the late Esther Sachs. She was also pre-
ceded in death by the late Esther Gross
and the late Caroline Weinbaum.
Interment at Clover Hill Park Cemetery.
