Dear
Bar , n you
explain what
resveratrol is
and what health
benefits, if any,
it may impart? Thanks, Darrell.

A

nswer: Dear Darrell,
Resveratrol is a polyphe-
nolic phytoalexin (whew,
say that 10 times fast). In slightly
plainer English, resveratrol is a
plant-based chemical substance
that contains phenols and possess-
es antibiotic properties produced
by the plant's defense mechanisms.

Resveratrol can be found in several
plants e.g., grapes (primarily skin
and seeds), mulberries, raspber-
ries, peanuts, cranberries, blueber-
ries, and Japanese knotweed,
4- among others. The highest
concentrations of resveratrol
can be found in Japanese
knotweed, muscadine
grapes/wine, and non-mus-
cadine red grapes/wine.

Interest in resveratrol
heightened this past
November, when the
/ online journal, Nature,
/ reported on a Harvard
/ study (involving mice) that
suggested that resveratrol
may reverse some obesity-related
complications associated with
diabetes, heart disease, and cancer,
and extend life. Studies are ongo-
ing in these and other areas.

Although available in supplement
form, resveratrol is still under
investigation and it's safety during
pregnancy and lactation has not
been established.
