Keego Harbor 248-681-646o 42 February 22 2007 t arlee Novice is hardly a novice when it comes to frustrating Bloomfield Hills Andover High School's volleyball opponents. "She's one of the best defensive spe- cialists in the OAA (Oakland Activities Association):' said longtime Andover coach Bob Hurdle. Statistics support Hurdle's tall praise for the 5-foot-0 senior. Novice (pronounced no-viss) recorded 191 digs in Andover's first 30 matches this season, an average of 6.3 per game, while making just 16 receiving errors. A player is credited with a dig when she keeps an oppos- ing team's shot from hitting the floor. Novice doesn't mind doing the dirty work for teammates, whose precise sets and thunderous spikes get more attention from fans and more ink in the newspapers. "I also play defense in soccer:' said Novice, Novice who participates in that sport for Andover and the Bloomfield Force travel program. "I guess that's my personality." Novice and four other Jewish play- ers have helped shape an Andover volleyball team that was 24-6 heading into the home stretch of the season. The Barons won the OAA Division II championship earlier this month. They clinched the division's best dual match record (7-1) with a victory over Rochester, then two days later won the division tournament as the No. 1 seed. Andover lost only one game in four matches in the tournament. That came in a 23 - 25, 25 - 23, 15 - 11 win over No. 3 seed Lake Orion in the finals. The Barons defeated Lake Orion twice in the tournament, avenging their lone division dual match loss. Lake Orion and West Bloomfield both went 6-2 in division dual matches, tying for sec- ond place behind Andover. Among the other Jewish players on Andover's roster, senior middle hitter Lauren Linden and junior right- side hitter Becca Segal join Novice in the Barons' starting lineup. Junior defensive specialist Jules Botham and junior outside hitter Jessica Langnas contribute off the bench. "Lauren has had an outstanding senior year:' Hurdle said, noting that Linden made just 17 errors on her first 162 kill attempts and was cred- ited with 68 kills. Look for Segal to move to left side hitter next season. Botham, who plays behind two seniors, and Langnas should see more action next year. West Bloomfield coach Jason Gold hoped his team would challenge Andover for the division tournament championship, but the No. 2-seeded Lakers lost two of three matches and exited early. Lake Orion and No. 4 seed Rochester defeated West Bloomfield (19-16-8 overall) after the Lakers had beaten both in division dual matches. West Bloomfield's lone tourna- ment victory was against No. 7 seed North Farmington, leaving the Lakers in fourth place in the overall division standings. Junior Debbie Gross didn't play for West Bloomfield in the tournament, opting to par- ticipate in a competition for the school's forensics team.
