Here's To . . .

The Bureau of Jewish Education in
California recently held its religious
school educators conference at which
a presentation was made of the

Smotrich Family Foundation award
to outstanding educators in religious
schools. One award was made to
Joshua Hearshen, formerly of Oak
Park and a graduate of Berkley High
School. Hearshen is a student in the
rabbinical program at the University
of Judaism and teaches multiple text
and Jewish history classes at Los
Angeles Hebrew High School. He has
been assistant director for high school
retreats for two years. He will receive
his religious ordination in May.

William J. Kohler
of Huntington
Woods has been
appointed to the
board of directors
for ORT America
Michigan Region.
He is co-chair of
Kohler
the ORT America
Michigan Planned
Giving Committee and a senior attor-
ney at the Detroit-based firm of Butzel
Long.

One of 20 notable books chosen by
the Michigan Library Foundation for
2006 was Bill Broder's Taking Care
of Cleo (Hansel Books-Other Press
2006).

Venturing Crew 18, chartered to
the Michigan Jewish Scouting Group
of West Bloomfield, won four first-
place and two third-place awards
at the Ottawa District's 2007 Winter
Klondike Games for Boy Scouts. The
Crew took home honors in fire build-
ing, the stretcher race, blind maze, log
cutting, and the obstacle course and
dodge ball snow fight. Venturing is
the high-school age coed program of
the Boy Scouts of America. Members
attend the Frankel Jewish Academy,
West Bloomfield, and Detroit Country
Day School, Beverly Hills.

Two local residents have been named
to the dean's list at Michigan State
University for fall 2006.
Jaclyn Wolok of West Bloomfield
is a freshman enrolled in the College
of Natural Science majoring in pre-
medical. She is on the board of Hillel
at MSU as social chair. Ryan Wolok
of West Bloomfield is a junior enrolled
in the College of Education, majoring
in kinesiology with pre-medical track-
ing. Both are graduates of Bloomfield
Hills Andover High School. Their par-
ents are Ken and Gloria Wolok of West
Bloomfield.
