JN: Barbara is obviously Jewish, but
you are more open about Jewish
topics than she is. Why is that?
JB: I am fearless on all subjects related
to bigotry. I live in New York City, and
my daughter is half Jewish. When I
was married to Joe in the 1960s, I had
both a Catholic and a Jewish ceremony.
We lied to the priest and didn't tell him
we were going to go under the chttp-
pah later — the rabbi was in cahoots
with us.

JN: What is your relationship with
Barbara Walters off screen?
JB: We are very friendly. I have been
to her house for dinner, we have had
showers at her home and we go out for
our birthdays. Several months ago she
threw a birthday party for [New York
City] Mayor Bloomberg, and I was there.
JN: How did his family feel about
that?
JB: They weren't happy that he was
marrying a shiksa, but they got over it.
JN: Did you ever think that after 10
years, The View would be such a hit?
JB: Right now it's a big hit because
Rosie O'Donnell has come on, and it's
become very controversial. She brings
in another audience and has been
great for the show.
JN: Were you surprised by all the
