Every family develops its own traditions — some by design, some by
accident. Those traditions are what make us who we are and what
remain with us throughout life. Tradition runs deep in Jewish families,
often centering on Shabbat or annual holidays.
We invite you to share your traditions with us in this spot each month
in Family Focus. Maybe others will find them meaningful or fun and
adopt them, too.
Tradition: In our home, my husband, Don, started a simple custom
during Shabbat Kiddush of passing our silver wine cup from Israel
around the table so everyone can hold the symbolic wine during the
prayer as we sing. He's very careful to be egalitarian and inclusive dur-
ing our Shabbat meals, and I think guests enjoy the gesture. I know
our daughters, Hannah and Emma, do. After Kiddush, the cup then is
passed a second time for all to take a taste.
