A
nswer: Dear Beth, you're
probably referring to alli
(distributed in the U.S. by
GlaxoSmithKline [GSK]), which is
the first weight-loss drug approved
by the FDA for non-prescription,
OTC sale (must be 18) in the U.S.
alli (not a typo—the "a" is small
case) is the new, low-dose version
of Orlistat, which is marketed by
Roche as the prescription-
4- strength drug, Xenical.
Both alli and Xenical act to
inhibit the absorption of
fatty acids in the intestinal
tract. The unabsorbed fat
is naturally excreted—a
noted side-effect of the
drug.
GSK claims alli blocks
about 25% of fat and can
/
boost
weight loss by as
*\)
much as 50%. The idea is
that since fat grams have
more than twice as many calories
as carbohydrates or protein, alli,
in conjunction with a weight-loss/
exercise program, can help the
body burn stored fat more quickly.
However, according to Dr. Charles
Ganley, the FDA's OTC division
director, "[u]sing the drug alone is
unlikely to be beneficial."

what's the
deal with this
new over-the-

weight-loss pill recently approved
by the FDA? Thanks, Beth.
Before embarking on any weigh-
loss program, it's always wise to
consult your physician first.
