workplace and labor-management
programs and policy to DLEG. Also
his experience studying and work-
ing in Haiti, India and China will
bring additional strength to the
governor's efforts to attract busi-
ness to Michigan from all over the
world."
Levin, son of U.S. Rep. Sander
Levin, D-Royal Oak, and nephew
of U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Detroit,
spent a year in India studying
Tibetan language and philosophy
before graduating cum laude from
Williams College in Massachusetts
with a bachelor's degree in religion
in 1983. He graduated in 1990 from
the University of Michigan with a
master's in Asian languages and
culture and, in 1994, he gradu-
ated cum laude from Harvard Law
School.
While at Harvard, he spent the
summer of 1992 on a fellowship
program working for Human
Rights Watch in Haiti.
Levin left his position as direc-
tor of the AFL-CIO's Voice@Work
Campaign (to restore worker's
freedom to form unions) to work
for DLEG.
"I see it as a great chance to
engage in tikkun olam (repair-
ing the world):' said Levin, who is
married to Mary Freeman; they
have four children. "We cannot
allow our fellow Michiganders to
be left behind or to go under in
the swift economic currents that
beset us. We need to 'Leave No
Worker Behind, as the governor
says, by making sure every worker
has access to great counseling,
education, retraining and entrepre-
neurship opportunities. While the
challenge is great, I'm really excited
about it."

JCCouncil Is Renamed
The Jewish Community Relations
Council is the new name of the
Detroit Jewish community's public
affairs agency.
The name change was made to
better describe the work of the
agency as well as to align it with
similar agencies across the country.
Council president is Wendy
Wagenheim. The new name has
been accompanied by a new logo
for the nearly 70-year-old agency.
A more interactive and informative
Web site to complement Council's
"makeover" is expected to be
launched in March.
