Born in 1918, he spent 41 years of his life educating and inspiring students in Detroit elementary, junior high and high schools. He was an art teacher at Southeastern and Pershing high schools, retiring in 1981. Charles grew up in Detroit; classical music and art were part of his upbring- ing and he remained devoted throughout his life to those forms of expression. As a teen, he learned to sketch military arti- facts, an interest which he developed over many years into extensive paintings of horses, uniformed soldiers, polo matches, Shakespeare plays and related subjects. He graduated from Northern High School and Wayne State University, major- ing in art education and began his teaching career. He met his future wife Marjorie Mitshkun while they were counselors at Fresh Air Camp. He served his country as an Army ser- geant during World War II; he became a cartographer, using his artistic talent to draw maps. Upon returning home, he rejoined his wife and new baby daughter Sandra and continued teaching, later corn- pleting a master's degree in educational administration. His family grew to three daughters [Betty and Deborah] but sadly his beloved wife passed away at the young age of 47. He later married his second wife Mercedes [Marty] who passed away in September 2006. He enjoyed his art work, working as arts and crafts director for several summers at Camp Tanuga, reading history books within his remarkable library collection and watching television documentaries.
