Tony Award for Best Play, Roses is a
subtle portrait of a small family in the
wake of World War II. A son who left
as a pampered boy returns from the
war as a man, and his parents compete
for his affection while trying to mask
the tension in their marriage.
The Broadway version debuted
in 1964, with Martin Sheen as the
son, Irene Dailey as the mother and
Jewish actor Jack Albertson as the
father. Albertson won a Tony for Best
Featured Actor and an Oscar for
Best Supporting Actor in the 1968
film version in which he reprised his
Broadway role.
Albertson (1907-1981) was prob-
ably best known for his role as Ed
Brown ("the Man") in the 1970s sit-
com Chico and the Man. He won
an Emmy for that role, making him
one of the few entertainers to win the
triple crown of entertainment (a Tony,
an Oscar and an Emmy).

Other best-known film roles.
included Charlie Bucket's Grandpa Joe
in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory (1971) and the husband
who encouraged his wife, the former
swimming champion played by Jewish
actress Shelley Winters, to swim for
safety in her Oscar-nominated role in
The Poseidon Adventure (1972).

Sundance Winners

JTA reports that two Israeli films
took prizes at the 2007 Sundance
Film Festival.
Sweet Mud (Adama Meshugaat
in Hebrew) received the World
Cinema Jury Prize for Drama. The
movie, Israel's Oscar entry for best
foreign film, tells the story of a
young Israeli boy coming of age on
a kibbutz while trying to provide
emotional support for his depres-
sive mother.
The World Cinema Documentary
Competition Jury presented a
Special Jury Prize to Hot House,
directed by Shimon Dotan, which
looks at how Israeli prisons have
become a breeding ground for
the next generation of Palestinian
leaders as well as the birthplace of
future terrorist threats. 1 - 1
