Gay Jews and their supporters hear

nclusion, diversity and equality captured the spirit of the evening as the
Jewish Gay Network of Michigan kicked off its Twice Blessed Speakers
Series at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield on Jan. 23 with
award-winning author and poet Leslea Newman.
Her discussion, "You Can't Be a Lesbian — You're Jewish!;' contained moving
and deeply personal readings from her works of poetry and fiction, includ-
ing her prize-winning story, "A Letter to Harvey Milk."
Newman is also the author of the pioneering children's
book, Heather Has Two Mommies.
In her lively conversation with the audience, Newman
talked about issues surrounding the intersection of
Jewish and gay identities. The evening drew to a close
with a book signing by Newman and a lovely reception.
More than 100 people attended the enlightening event
that was co-chaired by Linda Lee of West Bloomfield
and Judith Slotkin of Bloomfield Hills. "Our hard-
working committee is a group of 24 women who have
Annie Adelson
been meeting for over six months to develop this
Special to the
program as a true celebration of empowerment," said
Jewish News
Slotkin.
"This is about universal acceptance of all Jewish
women in Jewish life, with no labels among us. We are
promoting the opportunity to participate in Jewish life with equality," she said.
The organizers of this very special series, both gay and straight Jewish women,
are making a significant effort to bring the issues of social justice and human
rights within a Jewish framework to the public.
