, or 34 days last summer, 4000 bombs rained across

Northern Israel. The response in the Jewish Detroit

community was sure and swift. Within days of the

first strike, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit

launched its Israel Emergency Campaign, delivering

$1 million in humanitarian aid directed primarily to

communities under siege in Federation's Partnership
2000 region of the Central Galilee.

In response to the crisis in Israel over the summer, and

stepping up with a $1 million gift to lead the community's

fund raising effort to rebuild lives shattered by the war in

philanthropic choices,
Marvin Danto answers
simply, "I love Michigan.
I love my country.
I am a dedicated Jew."

Israel, Marvin and Betty Danto and their children, Joanne,
James, and Gail have established the Marvin and Betty

Danto Family Israel Emergency Challenge Fund. Thanks
to the Dantos' generosity, gifts to the Israel Emergency Fund
will be matched dollar-for-dollar. To date, the Danto gift has
leveraged close to $15 million in community contributions
to the Israel Emergency Fund.

Born and raised in Detroit, an engineer by education

and training, a pioneer in furniture retailing, and a

philanthropist for many years, Marvin Danto has long

been a quiet hero in our community and champion of

those in need. With Betty, his wife and partner for almost

65 years, he shares a multitude of interests and accomplish-

ments as a leader and benefactor of numerous civic,
arts and charitable organizations.

"I believe that Jewish people take care of their needy, their

young and elderly, and I am proud of that," Marvin observes.

"Our people are there when they're needed by those who can't
repay them."
