tle resort town happening here 26 miles south of Mount Bohemia." During
the Upper Peninsula mining rush in the late 1800s/early 1900s, Calumet was
one of Michigan's largest towns and mining barons built gorgeous homes in
the Keweenaw Peninsula. The most elaborate residence was the 45-room,
13,000-square-foot Hoaston home, now Laurium Manor Inn, an elegant 17-
guestroom bed and breakfast open year-round.
"We offer the amenities of a hotel with the ambiance of a historic prop-
erty," explains Sprenger. "All our rooms have private baths. Plus the whole
inn is wired, giving us turn-of-the-century history with 21st-century luxury."
But we think it's the after-skiing champagne greeting at the door by your
personal cabinkeeper that'll perk your interest in Trappers Cabin. One of
America's top ski/snowboarding resorts adds a luxury twist to its silver-anni-
versary winter season with a pampered snow adventure. Colorado's Beaver
Creek Mountain Resort, about 25 miles east of Eagle, features a cozy log-
cabin retreat 9,500 feet up the mountain. It's a stylish, private ski getaway:,,
with special amenities around the clock.
For between $850 and $950 per night, per person based on a four-per-
son minimum (10 maximum), Beaver Creek's Trappers Cabin includes the
services of a personal on-site chef, the cabinkeeper and a roustabout to keep
everything looking fresh. "There's nothing like it in North America — per-
haps the world," says Beaver Creek's Christina Schleicher. While the cab-
inkeeper is your right-hand assistant to pour the champagne and fetch the
fleece slippers, your chef prepares made-to-order breakfast and five-course
dinners inside the privacy of a spacious three-bedroom outpost high above
the European-style alpine village. For a little variety, lunch is included at one
of Beaver Creek's three on-mountain dining cabins.
The dinner menu entices with such treats as grilled beef and rainbow
trout, herb-seared venison loin and pepper-crusted elk loin, complete with
appetizers, most beverages and desserts.
When it's time to relax, venture outside to soak in the Jacuzzi or lounge
around inside by the stone fireplace near a reading library, CD collection,
player piano and game room.
Ski season at Beaver Creek Mountain Resort, a stunning five-star village
that's a member of the Vail Resorts collection, opened in November with a
portfolio of activities. Schleicher says two favorites still to come include the
Bon Appetit Culinary Classic & Celebrity Chef Race, Feb. 1-3, and Humor
on the Slopes, Feb. 23-25. The ninth annual celebrity chef winter festival
will spotlight some 30 chefs, tastings, a master chef challenge, cooking dem-
onstrations, wine seminars, live music and a celebrity ski race. The humor
program features the New Yorker magazine cartoonists in contests, discus-
sions, kids' activities and more.
On the slopes, Beaver Creek Ski & Snowboard School director Jim
Kercher says of the 1,625-acre complex, "We're known for our variety of ter-
rain. The mountain was actually laid out upside down, providing beginners
with a fantastic learning area at the summit and a true mountain experience."
The steeps, glades, long bump runs and the World Cup downhill course
make the Talons area a favorite hangout for experts. "Corduroy seekers,"
he adds, "will find great village-to-village cruising, as crews groom half the
mountain each day. We're blessed with great snow quality, exposures and
more than 300 days of sunshine a year." ❑
