"Relationships are the core of our existence," says
DR. TERRI ORBUCH, aka "The Love Doctor." The West
Bloomfield multi-media maven met her own husband,
Stuart — with whom she has two children, ages 9
and 12 — on a blind date 15 years ago. After hearing
"relationship myths" perpetuated by other experts in
the media, Orbuch took on her alter ego in an effort to
help people across the country enjoy more rewarding
relationships. The Ph. D. in psychology/sociology is a
professor at Oakland University and a research profes-
sor at the University of Michigan. She appears regularly
on WJBK-TV (Fox 2 News) in Detroit and in nationally
broadcast radio segments; she writes a column for
various publications and has been quoted in the New
York Times. She has a new three-CD set focusing on
passion, trust and conflict, and an inspirations book
called Love Lesson #1: Relationship Realities. "I really
enjoy listening to people's stories," Orbuch says, "I like
to figure out what keeps people together and what
breaks them apart." Here, we ask the Love Doctor our
version of the Four Questions.

WHAT BOOK, CD, MOVIE OR OTHER
MEDIA ARE YOU LONGING TO SHARE?
One of my most favorite movies is The
Big Chill, starring Glenn Close, Kevin Kline and
William Hurt. It is a story about old friends who
come together to help and support one another in a
time of stress and loss. The movie looks at the recon-
necting of old friends who reminisce about the past
together, how they have changed and what role they
have played in each other's lives. This movie is a
great example of the vital role relationships can play
in our lives. I also love all of John Grisham's books
— once I start reading, I can't put them down.

IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH WITH
ONE BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL JEWISH
FIGURE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
I admire strong women who have a passion for what
they believe in. When I think about strong women
in Jewish history, I think of Golda Meir. She was a
leader, a mother, passionate about her cause, emo-
tional, honest and worked hard. Many working
mothers feel torn by the competing demands of our
personal and professional lives, wanting to do both

and why?

extremely well and not wanting to sacrifice time or
energy in either. I would want to talk with her about
how she excelled in a predominantly male world, her
balancing of work and family and her passion for life.

3

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD?
There are so many Jewish foods I enjoy.
I would have to say that my favorite is
chopped liver and horseradish. It reminds me of my
grandmother, who used to make both in her base-
ment, crying as she squeezed the white radish on her
grinder. I also have been told that I make a pretty
mean noodle kugel.

4

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED
TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I love what I do and I think relationships
and love are everything! But it might be surprising
to learn that early on, I wanted to be a professional
tennis player. I played competitive tennis throughout
high school and taught tennis for years. The closest I
got to this dream was watching a Wimbledon match
live when I was in college. ❑
