To Life;

Dear
Bar , tely,
I've been
hearing a lot
of buzz about
pomegranates.
So, please tell me, what's the big
deal about pomegranates? Thanks,
Elaine.

A

nswer: Dear Elaine, A
little background: The
pomegranate fruit comes
from a deciduous shrub or small
tree called (not surprisingly) the
pomegranate. It's native habitat ex-
tends from Iran to the Himalayas
and has been cultivated over the
whole Mediterranean region. The
pomegranate was introduced to the
U.S. in the mid-late 1700s (Thomas
Jefferson is known to have
4- planted pomegranates at
Monticello in the 1770s).
Pomegranates are now
(\-/ grown commercially in the
drier parts of California
g) and Arizona.

The pomegranate was
described in a recent
Boston Globe article as
"the top superfruit of
[2006]," referring to it's
recent, dramatic rise in
popularity. A series of re-
cent scientific studies, notably in-
cluding a 2004 study by the Lipid
Research Center in Haifa, Israel,
have concluded that concentrated
pomegranate extracts (e.g., juice/
pulp) may have remarkable health
benefits, including reversing the
effects of atherosclerosis, reduc-
ing blood pressure, and inhibiting
tumors, among others.
