he malocclusion known as cross-bite is the most
common cause of facial asymmetry or irregularity.
Normally the arch of the lower jaw (mandible) is
slightly smaller than the arch of the upper jaw (maxilla),
resulting in the lower teeth closing inside the upper
teeth. A cross-bite occurs when the lower teeth overlap
the upper teeth either at the back of the dental arch or in
the front. When cross-bites occur with the front teeth,
the result can be a protruding chin. When the cross-bite
occurs in the back the result is a narrowness of the face
and a poor bite.

Cross-bites should be corrected, as the teeth do not mesh together properly and
can result in improper wear of the teeth, inappropriate forces causing further
dental problems and even breakage of teeth with need for restoration, which can
predispose an individual to TMD (jaw joint problems) and cosmetic concerns.
The best method for correcting a cross-bite involves repositioning the teeth
through orthodontic treatment. However, there are some severe cases when
orthognathic surgery may also be required for a full correction. This type of jaw
correcting surgery entails surgically reshaping or postioning the bones of the jaw,
and is entirely performed within the mouth as to leave no visible scars. Some
cross-bites can be corrected without surgical intervention if treated while the
patient is still growing. Other times, growth, which is genetic, will determine
when correction is best timed. It is best to allow an orthodontic specialist to
perform an exam to determine ideal timing of correction.
