Protesting Carter
There has been considerable com-
ment generated by the publication of
former President Jimmy Carter's book
Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.
The general comments are that
President Carter's comments are high-
ly subjective and seem to be based on
interpretations of the situation (his-
torically and otherwise) that reflect a
bias in favor of the Palestinian view-
point (at one end of the spectrum of
comments) all the way to the sugges-
tion that his writing may be compared
to the infamous anti-Semitic forgery
The Protocols of the Learned Elders
of Zion.
A recent program presented on
public television attempted to show
why anti-Semitism is so pronounced,
especially in the Muslim world.
Stereotypical comments and editorial
cartoons, as well as newspaper articles
and television productions, continue
to reflect the policies of Arab govern-
ments.
It is in the interest of Jews in par-
ticular, and Americans in general, that
truthful commentaries relating to the
situation in the Middle East should
be presented, rather than subjective
commentaries, which do not present
a balanced approach, regardless of the
fame and experience of the individual
writing the commentary.
If the readers of this publication
believe that the publisher of the book
should re-evaluate its decision to
publish this book, I hope you will
write and express your opinion on the
subject. The publisher's address is:
Simon and Schuster Inc., Corporate
Communication Department, 1230
Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY

Consider Wayne
Arthur Horwitz's Publisher's Letter
("Wayne State's Jewish Roots;' Jan. 11,
page 5) got it exactly right in empha-
sizing the importance of Wayne State
University to the future of Detroit and,
therefore, to our Jewish community.
More metro area Jews are gradu-
ates of WSU than any other university.
Wayne has educated many of the doc-
tors, lawyers, pharmacists, business
leaders, social workers, engineers and
teachers who today lead our commu-
nity.
With an active Hillel chapter, a
growing residential campus in the
resurgent midtown Detroit area, an
honors program of 1,500 students
and some of the best professors and
researchers in Michigan, Wayne State
is a natural place for Jewish college
students to enroll.
For Jewish college-bound students
and their parents who may have
looked past WSU, it's time to take
another look. The great education it
provided earlier generations of our
community has only gotten better over
time.
