M

ore than 120 girls and women gathered
on Jan. 9 at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield
Township for the first book discussion
meeting of Am Echad/Sefer Echad (One People,
One Book), a community book club for girls, ages
11-13 and their female valuable persons. Participants
enjoyed dinner as well as meeting author Sarah
Darer Littman, who wrote Confessions of a Closet
Catholic, the Sydney Taylor Award-winning book they
were discussing.
Littman talked with the girls and signed books.
After dinner she gave a lively presentation about her
life and writing, and answered many questions from
the audience.
Sue Kalisky, facilitator of the Congregation B'nai
Moshe group, said, "Almost every mom from B'nai
Moshe e-mailed or called me to say how much she and
her daughter enjoyed the program:'
Marcia Leibson of Temple Emanu-El said, "I thought
the program was great. The author was delightful."
Participants came from Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Congregation Beth Shalom, B'nai Moshe, Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, Temple Beth El, Temple Emanu-
El and Temple Israel.
Am Echad/Sefer Echad is being funded through
a grant by the Jewish Women's Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit and was conceived and orga-
nized by Eileen Polk, librarian of the Prentis Memorial
Library at Temple Beth El; Keren Alpert, Temple Beth
El education director; and Rita Soltan, librarian, author
and literacy consultant.
Discussion groups now will meet at their home
congregations. To join or for more information, contact
your synagogue or call Eileen Polk or Keren Alpert at
Temple Beth El, (248) 851-1100. There is no charge. I I
