ban permanently. We showed cases
where it does just that.
"No one prohibits homosexuality
in the sense of thinking and iden-
tity. However, Rabbi Roth prohibits
any homosexual activity, and bans
those who engage in such activity
from religious leadership, and also
from having their relationships for-
mally recognized!"

What's Next?
The decisions made are not
edicts. Individual congregations
will decide whether to hire gay
and lesbian clergy. Conservative
movement institutions, including
seminaries and cantorial schools,
will make decisions on enrollment
of gay and lesbian students. Rabbis
will individually decide whether or
not to perform gay commitment
ceremonies. There was no discus-
sion of same-sex marriages among
committee members.
"No doubt there are multiple
points of view in our movement:'
Rabbi Nevins said. "My hope is that
we all treat these issues and those
they affect with respect!'
He understands some may
leave a congregation if a gay rabbi
is hired and some who may not
attend a gay commitment cer-
emony if invited. But he adds,
"There are others who would leave
the movement if we did not adopt
a more inclusive policy and some
who are joining the movement
because of it!"
Following the meeting, he said,
"I am concerned that some people
who are not comfortable with the
change feel uneasy expressing
themselves."
To try to address that concern, he
said, "I tried to make the meeting
a safe space for people at all points
of the spectrum to express them-
selves. We asked that questions be
written so that people would feel
more at liberty to be candid about
their opinions. I think it was a sub-
stantial and respectful discussion,
which itself is a success given the
emotions involved." I
