RETIREMENT LIVING
"It's been one
of the best years
of my life."
"Living at The Park at
Trowbridge has been a
wonderful change for me. I felt
at home right away. I've enjoyed
my apartment much more than
I ever would have imagined.
At first, I was worried that I'd
miss my old neighborhood. The
truth is that I've made a lot of
new friends through fitness
activities, crafts and other
things going on here.

forum on the Conservative
movement's recent vote
on gay and lesbian issues was led by
Rabbi Daniel Nevins, who co-authored
one of the recently approved responsa
on the issue.
Rabbi Nevins offered insight and

Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
hills, where he serves as rabbi.
My kids sometimes complain
that I'm never in my apartment
when they call, but I know it
puts their minds at ease that
I'm so busy.
Living at The Park at
Trowbridge is like being with
friends all day long. I never
dreamed my life could be
so much fun!"

Rachel Leskill of East Lansing takes
notes.
"Homosexuality and Jewish Law,"
co-sponsored by the Rabbinical
Assembly of Michigan and the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America,
attracted 150 individuals, including
rabbis and members of each area
Conservative si nagogue as well as
members of o her Jewish streams.
Rabbi Nev'ns, who sits on the
movement's Committee on Jewish Law
and Stand .rds, offered background on
the comr Lime's longtime discussions
on the i sues as well as what led to the
creatir of the paper he co-wrote. The
ar ,'.fence was quiet and attentive.
Last month, members of the
committee voted on five responsa
relating to the place of gay and
lesbian individuals in Conservative
Judaism. Debates focused largely
on the interpretation of the biblical
verse, "One shall not lie with a man
as one lies with a woman."
The two papers that won major-
ity support held opposing views,
but both were approved by majority
vote.
One, "Homosexuality Revisited,"
authored by Rabbi Joel Roth of the
Jewish Theological Seminary in
New York, advocated the previously
accepted Conservative view. "Rabbi
Roth argues that all acts of sexual
intimacy between same-sex part-
ners are biblically forbidden, not
just anal intercourse between men,"
Rabbi Nevins said.
The other, "Homosexuality,
Human Dignity and Halakhah,"
co-authored by Rabbi Nevins and
Rabbis Elliot Dorff of the University
of Judaism and Avram Reisner of
Baltimore, allows for ordination of
openly gay men and women and
for them to be able to participate in
commitment ceremonies, but main-
tains the status quo prohibition on
sexual intercourse between men.
"We argue that there are two lev-
els of prohibition: biblical and rab-
binic," Rabbi Nevins said. "And that
the rabbinic-level prohibitions can
be superseded because of human
dignity. Rabbi Roth argues that even
if we are right that other intimate
acts are "only" rabbinically forbid-
den, human dignity is not a strong
