7, her mother remarried Jerry
Wexler, a Chicago Jewish business-
man.
It was a "Brady Bunch" family,
with Wexler and his four daugh-
ters (from his prior marriage to a
Jewish woman) living in the same
house with Darryl, her sister and
her mother. Darryl described Jerry,
now deceased, as an inspiring and
loving man whom she considers
to be her father. She also thinks
of herself as Jewish, although it
seems she hasn't formally con-
verted.

Peerless Piper

Opening nationwide today is the
horror-mystery film Dead Girl, star-
ring Toni Collette, Brittany Murphy,
Marcia Gay Harden, Rose Byrne,
Mary Beth Hurt, James Franco
(Spider-Man) and Piper Laurie.

Five stories about apparently
unrelated people come together to
reveal the reasons for the death of
a young prostitute (Murphy).
In the opening segment,
Murphy's body is found by a hor-
rified Toni Collette.
Playing Collete's
abusive, invalid
mother is veteran
Jewish actress Piper
Laurie, 74, in what
one reviewer called
"full-out Carrie
Piper Laurie
mode."
Laurie, most film
fans know, gave an electrifying
performance as the loony-tunes
mother of Sissy Spacek in Carrie,
the horror classic.
The actress, who was born
Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, has
always been open and proud of
being Jewish and has expressed
her regret that the studio forced
her, back in the 1950s, to change
her name. She has received Best
Supporting Actress Oscar nomina-
tions for Carrie and for her perfor-
mance as Marlee Matlin's mother
in Children of a Lesser God.
