For Religious Freedom
The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit strongly con-
demns the criticism of Congressman-
elect Keith Ellison's decision to use
the Koran when he took his oath to
become a United States representative.
Those elected to office hold a public
trust and have a responsibility to act
in the best interest of our nation and
society. Mr. Ellison's commitment to
fulfill that responsibility was demon-
strated by his taking the oath over the
book of his faith rather than the scrip-
tures of others.
Ours is a nation founded on the
principle of religious freedom. The
U.S. Constitution prohibits reli-
gious tests for office, and the First
Amendment adds both a freedom
from religious establishment and a
freedom of religious exercise. Together,
these provisions ensure Congressman-
elect Ellison's right to use a Koran dur-
ing his swearing-in ceremony.
Denying Mr. Ellison his right to
choose which scripture to use would
not only affront Muslims, but under-
mine the rights of all Americans.

more people who work toward positive
outreach through peaceful means, as
Mr. Begg models for us all.

Generous, Giving
I write in response to the comments
that appeared in the letter "Delusional
Thinking" by Mark Segel (Jan. 11,
page 8). Victor Begg is an outstanding
American citizen who tirelessly gives
back to the community with a special
interest in mobilizing the power of
human understanding through mean-
ingful dialogue. He is anything but an
"extremist:" His long and esteemed
record of community service is evi-
dence of his moderate views.
He is a generous and giving soul; a
light among men.
We would all be better off reserving
judgment based on broad and weak
suppositions regarding the complexi-
ties of an individual's views. We need

Countering the report, Daniel
Kurtzer, former U.S. ambassador
to Egypt and Israel, said recently
that If the United States bro-
kered peace talks between
Israel and the Palestinians, do
you think a single Iraqi gunman
would put down his guns? Not a
