Special to the Jewish News

Z

ev Chafets is known for tak-
ing his readers on a wild
ride, whether it be through
Jewish America in Members of
the Tribe, Israel in Heroes and
Hustlers, Hard Hats and Holy
Men or the mean streets of Detroit in
Devil's Night.
In his new book, A Match Made
in Heaven: American Jews,
Christian Zionists and One Man's
Exploration of the Weird and
Wonderful Judeo-Evangelical
Alliance (HarperCollins; $24.95),
the Pontiac, Mich., native explores
American Christian evangelicals and
their relationship to Israel and Jews.
As the new book's title and subtitle
make clear, Chafets is in favor of the
relationship. He will speak about
the book 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at
Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills.
"I hope the book will inform peo-
ple, in some small way, that now is
not the right time for Jews to engage

in political warfare against evan-
gelical churches:' says Chafets. "It is
dangerous, mistaken, old-fashioned
and unfair policy that can undermine
support for Israel and the relation-
ship between the American Jewish
community and Israel:'
Chafets, 59, and a University of
Michigan graduate, moved to Israel in
1967. Following his army service, he
headed the government press office
for five years under Prime Minister
Menachem Begin.
He was a founding editor of the
Jerusalem Report and a columnist
for the New York Daily News.
The author of nine books of fiction,
media criticism and social and politi-
cal commentary, he currently lives in
New York and has a son in the Israeli
army.
Chafets claims no particular affini-
ty for evangelical Christianity, no ani-
mosity toward Islam or Arabs and no
alignment with a political platform.
"I see this problem as a Jew," says
Chafets. "I have a problem with
people who have a problem with me
