A nswer: Dear Joe, Alzheim- er's is a neurodegenerative disease—a progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys a person's cognitive func- tions. It is the most common form of dementia. Currently, there is no medical cure for Alzheimer's. The #1 risk factor for Alzheimer's is increasing age. At age 65 your risk is 1.5% and doubles roughly every 5 years thereafter. 4_ Other risk factors are family history, genetics, head injury, environmen- tal, heart health (blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high cholesterol), and general health/well-being issues. I recommend you focus on things within your control, i.e., maintain proper weight, avoid to- bacco, limit alcohol, and reduce saturated fat/cholesterol in- take. Also, eat more dark-skinned fruits/vegetables (highest antioxi- dant levels), cold-water fish (high in omega-3 fatty acids) and nuts/ seeds high in vitamin E. Nutrient supplements E, C, B12, folate (folic acid), and omega-3 fish oil may be helpful. Last, but not least, stay socially connected and mentally and physically active.
