or 34 days last summer,
4,000 bombs rained
across northern Israel.
The response in the Jewish Detroit
community was swift. Within
days of the first strike, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
launched its Israel Emergency
Campaign, immediately deliver-
ing $1 million in humanitarian
aid directed primarily to commu-
nities under siege in Federation's
Partnership 2000 region of the
Central Galilee.
In response to the crisis in Israel,
Marvin and Betty Danto and
their children, Joanne, James and
Gail, have established the Marvin
and Betty Danto Family Israel
Emergency Challenge Fund. Every
new gift to the Israel Emergency
Fund will be matched dollar-for-
dollar. To date, the Danto gift has
leveraged close to $15 million in
community contributions to the
Israel Emergency Challenge Fund.
"I believe it's a tribute to our
people to be charitable said Danto.
"The Jewish community in greater
Detroit has a big heart, always
striving to do more for our needy,
our elderly, our children, our future.
One of the many pressing needs
right now is to restore a degree of
normalcy to life in northern Israel!"
The goal for Federation's 2007
Campaign is $48 million, including
the Israel fund goal of $15 million.
The overall goal represents the
highest total in Federation's history.
Contributions to the Danto Fund
we be sent immediately to Israel.
Donations can be made online
at www.thisisfederation.org ; by
phone, (248) 205-2550; or by check
payable to the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, P.O. Box 2030,
