he local premiere showing
of the groundbreaking film
Through the Same Door:
Inclusion Includes College will doc-
ument the journey of a student with
a cognitive disability who wanted to
go to college. Micah Fialka-Feldman,
a Berkley High graduate, now attends
Oakland University. He is the son of
Janice Fialka and Rich Feldman.
Show time is 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at
Berkley High School, southeast corner
of Coolidge and 11 1/2 Mile.
Michigan State Board of Education
member Elizabeth Bauer will speak on
inclusive education and why universal
education works for all of us. Informal
opportunities to network and learn
(or just shmooze): Local agencies and
advocacy groups will share resources
and materials. Many people who have
been involved in Micah's journey will
be available to share what they have
learned as well.
Through the Same Door:
Inclusion Includes College won
the 2006 TASH Image Award for the
Positive Portrayal of People with
Disabilities. TASH is an international
membership association leading the
way to inclusive communities through
research, education and advocacy.
The spirit of community and love
accentuates the 25-minute film. The

story line tracks the commitment and
dedication of Micah, his family, teach-
ers, professors, friends and the com-
munity to the creation of a journey
of hope and inclusion. University of
Michigan film graduate Paul Rossen
produced the film. In it, you learn
about the Circle of Friends, the Links
program and Micah's use of technol-
ogy.
Rossen shot more than 33 hours
of film. From Micah's bus ride up
Woodward Avenue to his studies with
his peers at OU, Rossen created and
edited Micah's inclusive education
experience.
The film is funded by the Albert
and Doris Pitt Foundation. The Jan. 21
program is sponsored by the Berkley
Schools, United Cerebral Palsy of
Metro Detroit, Everyone Together and
Dance of Partnership.
"Micah shows us all not only what
is possible in his future, but what
should be possible for all students.
He is charming, funny and thinks
outside the box. He has a lot to teach
us all about what is possible in life.
This video will open your eyes to these
possibilities," says Meg Grigal, Ph.D.
co-author of Transition Services
for Students with Significant
Disabilities in College and
Community Settings.
