Delusional Thinking
Victor Begg, who chairs the Islamic
Organization of America and
co-chairs Interfaith Partners, the
Michigan Roundtable for Diversity
and Inclusion, is not a moder-
ate Muslim. By dismissing two
respected commentators on Islamic
extremism, Daniel Pipes and Steve
Emerson, he proves that he is
unwilling to face the devastating
problems within his religion (the
ideology of jihad). He would rather
blame the Jews.
By announcing that Jimmy
Carter's book, Palestine: Peace
not Apartheid, speaks for Muslim
America ("The Lingering Expanse,'
Dec. 21, page 5), he ignores the over-
whelming Muslim responsibility for
the ongoing Arab war against Israel.
It is delusional on the part of Jews
to engage in this type of dialogue.

More Welcoming
I would like to applaud the
Conservative movement for continu-
ing to take steps to be more welcom-
ing to interfaith families ("Enrollment
Debate,' Dec. 21, page 22).
When Rabbi Jerome Epstein
announced his plans for a move-
ment-wide initiative to engage the
intermarried last year, it wasn't clear
what the practical consequences
would be. But his impassioned plea
to day schools to "make a special
effort to enroll the children of inter-
married Jews even if they are not
halachically Jewish" shows that he is
backing up his words with action.
Too often, people in the Jewish
community talk about outreach
(efforts to engage the intermarried)
and inreach (efforts to engage born
Jews and socialize them with other
Jews) as if they are mutually exclu-
sive projects. But if Conservative day
schools admit the children of non-
Jewish mothers, they will be per-
forming outreach and inreach at the
same time. Admitting the children
of interfaith families into Jewish day
schools is a win-win for the Jewish
community and the intermarried.

Correction
"Pedaling for Israel" (Dec. 28, page
48) stated that Cheryl Cook lives in
Israel; she actually resides in New
York City.
