They have worked separately as well
as together.
While he has done orchestrations
for musical theater, she has written
for musical theater and children's
programming, including Sesame
Street. Lawrence, who has done the
scoring for the TV series Jericho, also
has been part of the creative team for
the Disney films Pop Rocks and The
Cheetah Girls 2.
Getting along as co-workers and
spouses is something that the couple
can take from Lawrence's parents, sing-
ers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.
"The wonderful thing is to be able
to share your entire life with some-
body, professionally and personally,
and that makes for a much richer
experience says Lawrence, who also
does some background singing for
recordings. "The trick can be [know-
ing when] to make work as separate
as possible from personal life
Raised in a home with
Conservative Jewish values, Lawrence
has collaborated with a friend on a
work-in-progress theater piece based
on letters written by children of the
Holocaust.

"I'm really lucky right now because
the people at Disney have put my wife
and me in a position where what we
do is immediately realized and appre-
ciated by our daughter, Mabel, 10:'
says Lawrence, who lives outside Los
Angeles and composes at a computer
or grand piano.
"Faye and I are doing something
that is so important in Mabel's life
and in her friends' lives, and she
has a much greater appreciation of
the arts because of High School
Musical.
"It's hard to carve a path with any
creative career. You have to be lucky.
When that opportunity comes, you
have to be prepared. The spirituality
of hope, optimism and love is what
I take with me every day in terms of
Judaism." 1 7;

ANSWERS to quiz
on page 41:

promise to Abraham that his chil-
dren would be "as the stars of the
heavens."
8) The white of the kittel shows
that the husband and his wife are
beginning a life together with a
clean slate. Their transgressions are
behind them, and they will begin
anew.
9) Although the bride walking
around her husband is probably the
most recognized Jewish wedding
tradition, there is no specific reason
for it. Some offer kabbalistic expla-
nations; others say it shows how
a woman encircles her home with
love, protecting her husband and
children. The seven is a reference
to the days of creation; just as God
created the world in seven days,
a woman is about to create a new
world with her beloved.
10) This tradition, which dates
back to talmudic times, likely refers
to our need to keep Israel in mind
at all times. Even in the midst of a
joyous celebration, we remember
the destruction of the Holy Temple.
(Or, for those a bit more cynical, the
smashing of the glass shows the
last time the man will be able to put
his foot down.)

1)The groom approaches the
chuppah first so that his bride may
be brought to him, just as Eve was
brought to Adam (Genesis 2:22).
Because Eve was created after
Adam, she was believed to be the
higher life form, and Adam was
incomplete without her.
2) It is traditional for the bride
and groom to each have two
escorts, just as two angels escorted
Adam and Eve when they were wed.
3) The ketubah outlines a man's
responsibilities to his wife, such as
his obligation to feed and clothe
her.
4) The chuppah symbolizes the
home the couple will build together.
5) False. In fact, no one needs to
be there to conduct the wedding.
All that is necessary for a Jewish
wedding is a bride, a groom and two
witnesses.
6) Kiddushin translates to "sanc-
tification." This is because a mar-
riage is not merely a contractual
agreement but something holy
— the uniting of two souls and the
fulfillment of a mitzvah, a com-
mandment.
7) Jewish weddings are often held
outdoors at night to recall God's
