at 8 p.m. and throughout the week-
end. Co-hosting the show is Detroiter
Michael "MC Serch" Berrin, a former
member of the pioneering white rap
group 3rd Bass. The white rapper has
been called "a bridge between the
Beastie Boys and Eminem."
The New York-born Berrin, who
is Jewish, married and the father of
three, relocated to Detroit in 2003 to
host Serch in the AM on WJLB; he
was the first Jewish DJ on the Motor
City's premier urban radio station. He
left that job in March 2006 but still
operates his promotions company,
Serch Light Productions.
The new VH1 show features 12
white contestants who compete in a
series of challenges to test their MC
(rap) skills, knowledge of hip-hop and
ideas about race. They live together in
the South Bronx while facing a variety
of creative and cultural trials, includ-
ing a freestyle battle at St. Andrew's

Hall in Detroit, with the winner taking
home a $100,000 cash prize.
"The White Rapper Show will give
America a chance to learn about the
culture in a way that is palatable and
digestible, and at the same time get
them invested in each contestant of
the show and their view of hip-hop:'
says Berrin on his My Space blog.
"I left L.A. feeling very satisfied that
this show is like the first Wu Tang
album, or the first Nas album, or the
first Outkast album.
"All of these albums are classics;
they were rough around the edges
production wise, but these albums
changed the landscape of the culture.
"I know this is a big statement, but

also saved Anne's diary. (Gies is a
character in the movie.)
Opening on Friday, Jan. 12, is
Alpha Dog, which is based on a
rather tawdry true story.
A stoned-out high school kid,
played by Ben Foster (Six Feet
Under), owes money to drug deal-
ers. They decide to kidnap his
younger brother and hold him as
ransom for Foster's debt.
One Jewish critic, who saw an
advance screening, pointed out a
few of the flick's flaws - like no
explanation as to why Foster has
Nazi memorabilia in his room and
an unintentionally ludicrous scene
at Foster's Jewish father's house,
where a piece of framed Hebrew
calligraphy is displayed like an art
work. The problem? The Hebrew
in the artwork translates to
"Beware of Pickpockets."

Short Notes

Cable station BET has just started
showing repeat episodes of the
HBO series The Wire, airing 9
p.m. Thursdays. Many critics have
hailed this gritty program about
cops and drug dealers on the
streets of Baltimore as even bet-
ter than The Sopranos.
The Wire was created and often
is written by David Simon, former-
ly a Baltimore Sun police reporter

He also created Homicide: Life on
the Street.
Tony Shalhoub (Monk) just
spoke to the press about his
movie American East, which is
now filming. Shalhoub plays an
Egyptian-born Jew who opens
a Los Angeles coffee shop with
his best friend, a Muslim Arab-
American. Their friendship is a
source of some consternation
to both characters' friends and
families.
Shalhoub, who is from a
Lebanese Christian Arab back-
ground, says the film will show the
negative effects
of 9-11 on Arab
Americans, but it
will be a human-
istic story that
shakes things up
through unexpect-
trna Phillips
ed pairings.
On Jan. 25, the
soap opera The Guiding Light will
mark its 70th anniversary on the
air. It began as a radio program
and moved to TV in 1952. Its cre-
ator was !ma Phillips (1901-1973),
a Jewish woman who is generally
credited as the creator of the
soap opera form. Remarkably, two
other soaps Phillips created, Days
of Our Lives and As the World
Turns, also are still running.
