welve B'nai B'rith softball
players are headed west to
help make history.
The Pisgah Zeiger Motor City Hit
Men will compete in the first Valley
of the Sun Jewish Community Center
national men's softball tourna-
ment Saturday through Monday in
Scottsdale, Ariz. The Hit Men are the
lone B'nai B'rith team in the seven-
team field, and the only squad from a
cold-weather state.
The remaining teams are based in
Las Vegas, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson
and Southern California and represent
other Jewish organizations.
Most of the Hit
Men are from the
Pisgah Zeiger team
that shared the B'nai
B'rith regular-season
championship with Pisgah II last sum-
mer. Playoff champion Pisgah II also
is represented on the Hit Men, as are
Brotherhood I and Zager Stone.
Pisgah Zeiger coach Rick Sherline,
who organized the Hit Men, said this
isn't a B'nai B'rith all-star team, but
everyone is serious about playing
softball.
"I don't know how we'll do because
we don't know too much about the
other teams;' Sherline said. "We're
pretty much going in blind. That's
all right, though, because we're more
interested in the camaraderie and hav-
ing a good time."
The Hit Men range in age from
the 20s through the 50s. Marc
Weberman, 54, is the oldest player.
Off the field, the players' occupations
include attorney, certified public
accountant, doctor, financial plan-
ner, insurance agency owner and real
estate broker. They live throughout the
Metropolitan Detroit area.
Pisgah Zeiger players include
Justin Fisher, Michael Geller,
Danny Rosenberg, Lyle Schaefer,
Sherline, Bruce Weberman
and Marc Weberman. Matt
Brand, Alan Mudryk and
Michael Shanku are from
Pisgah II, Jonathan Goldberg
is from Brotherhood I and Jeffrey
Weberman is from Zager Stone.
Six of the Hit Men got together on
an unseasonably warm but blustery
day Dec. 17 for a practice session on a
soggy diamond at Drake Community
Sports Park in West Bloomfield.
Each team in the Valley of the Sun
tournament will play a minimum of
four games. After round-robin com-
petition Saturday and Sunday, the
championship will be determined in a
single-elimination playoff Monday.
B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region
picked up the Hit Men's $500 team
entry fee. Each of the Hit Men will
pay about $500 for travel and lodg-
ing."We found some cheap airfares
on Southwest Airlines on the Internet
and we're getting a tournament rate of
$139 a night at the Chaparral Suites in
Scottsdale:' Sherline said.
B'nai B'rith softball players head
west for weekend tournament.
The average high temperature in
Scottsdale this time of year is the
mid-60s, so weather shouldn't be an
issue during tournament games. "But
we'd love it if it was warmer than that:'
Sherline said.
Regional Winners

We knew Mom was fully
settled when she stopped
watching her soap operas.
She leaves for breakfast
at 8:30 and sometimes
doesn't return until
evening.
Mom is busy meeting new
friends, and I'm happy
she's enjoying life again."
