Using coins collected in a Penny Harvest, the annual event is the culmination of a curriculum taught in Jewish day schools and congregations to demonstrate the value of charitable giving and tzedakah (the Jewish concept of righteous acts). Highlights of the morning include hands-on counting and allocating dollars raised to support Jewish agencies in the Metro Detroit area. Students can also "shop" for volunteer opportunities in the "Mitzvah Mall',' where Jewish communal agencies will present a variety of needs and volunteer programs.
