Pho to cou r tesy of Judy Woo dru f f Veteran broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff hosts this exam- ination of the roots and resur- gence of anti-Semitism. the propagandizing use of Palestinian refugees and camps are diversionary tactics to draw away from abuses of their own populations in their native lands. "These diversions are not new. What is new is that prior to the new technol- ogy, these claims didn't have any con- sequences within Europe. That is the difference,' notes New York University Professor Tony Judt. What is new, he adds, is that it is on TV 24-7. One million Muslim immigrants arrive in Europe each year. There are now 20 million Muslims in Europe, many of whom have trouble integrat- ing both socially and economically into the European mainstream. Already alienated and lacking a cultural iden- tity, this propaganda incites them further and invites revenge on the local Jewish kid or synagogue, explains author Reza Asian. Despite the rise in world anti- Semitism, feelings about how signifi- cant a threat it poses varies. For Israelis, it is a real daily threat and something to worry about, says Washington Post columnist David Ignatius. "When the president of Iran says he wants to wipe Israel off the map, at some level he means it." In the interest of stabilizing this part of the world, Arabs will have to break through this hatred, the journalist cautions. Woodruff asks the hard-hitting $64 million question: Would resolution between Israel and the Palestinians lead to a decline in anti-Semitism? Columbia University Professor Rashid Khalidi believes "that if you were to have a rapid, just resolution of the issue, the overwhelming majority of what one sees in the form of anti- Semitism and expression of hostilities would disappear." Professor Dina Porat of Tel Aviv University strongly disagrees. "It's so useful; it serves a purpose ... It will perhaps diminish, but not vanish." Quoting 18th century English author Samuel Johnson, Woodruff says, "There is in every age new errors to be recti- fied and new prejudices to be opposed." Like the rest of this sagacious film, Woodruff reminds us that prejudice does as much damage to the perpetra- tors as to the victims. This extraordinary documentary offers a clear-eyed, comprehensive overview, without rhetoric or hyper- bole, of just how problematic and complex the ongoing prejudice of anti- Semitism remains. 11 STAR DELI and shortly after World War I and brought with them the traditions of European Christianity, which often, but not always, includes conversa- tions about Jews being the killers of Jesus. AG: I need people to understand how dangerous this way of thinking is. One very important point is that these [anti-Semitic] ideas are all sustained by Middle Eastern govern- ments. What does Saudi Arabia or Yemen have to with Israel? Yet a discussion of Israel is on the news every night. It's a way the govern- ments unite the people, create a common enemy and make them for- get their own problems. COMPARE OUR LOW PRICES WITH ANY DELICATESSEN IN TOWN!
