Her just-released book, Because They Hate: A Survivor of
Islamic Terror Warns America, is a compelling memoir of her
family's harrowing experiences as Christians during the
Lebanese Civil War. She credits Israeli doctors with saving her
mother during the war, a turning point in her life that left her
with a profound admiration for the State of Israel.

Ms. Gabriel is the founder of American Congress for Truth,
an organization dedicated to educating Americans about
the threat of radical Islam.

Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield will honor the the 100th
anniversary of the birth of Rabbi
Abraham Joshua Heschel. Rabbi
Steven Rubenstein will lead a four-
part Shabbat morning learning series
throughout January. Sessions will take
place 9-9:30 a.m. prior to Shabbat
services. The series is free and open
to the community.
Among Rabbi Heschel's many
classic books is The Sabbath, in
which he laid out his poetic vision of
Shabbat as a "cathedral in time."
Rabbi Heschel was a close to
Martin Luther King Jr. and was active
in the civil rights movement. He
was a leader in the campaign to free
Soviet Jewry and an opponent of the
Vietnam War. He died in 1972 at 65.

Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills will celebrate
the centenary of the birth of Rabbi
Abraham Joshua Heschel with a lunch
and learn series Thursdays, Jan. 11
and 18.
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz will
discuss the life and works of Rabbi
Heschel, who became one of the
most quoted Jewish theologians of
the 20th century.
Classes will run from noon-1:15
p.m. There is a $10 per session fee,
which includes lunch. The commu-
nity is welcome.
Lunch and learn is sponsored
by the Adat Shalom Adult Study
Commission. Respond to Charlotte

Thursday prior to each program.

A free five-week crash course on
the basics of Judaism will start 7:30
p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at 1578 Lakeside
Drive, Birmingham. The course con-
tinues Monday nights, ending Feb. 5.
The course, which explores the
role of meditation, family, soul and
commandments in the Jewish faith,
is co-sponsored by the National
Jewish Outreach Program and the
Birmingham-Bloomfield Chai Center.
Rabbi Boruch Cohen will teach.
Future offerings include Hebrew
classes, a model Passover seder and a
crash course in Jewish history.
