Dear Barb, ave a guest coming for dinner that suffers from a nut allergy. I had planned to use nutmeg in my cooking and now I'm concerned that might trigger my guest's al- lergic reaction. Help, Debbie. nswer: Dear Debbie, Al- lergic reaction to nuts can ..L be serious. Although rare, allergic reaction to nuts can lead to anaphylaxis (a sudden, severe, potentially fatal systemic allergic reaction). Peanut allergy is respon- sible for more fatalities than 11-- any other type of allergy. Here's a list of nuts known to cause allergic reactions: peanuts, almonds, Brazil , nuts, cashews, chestnuts, filberts, hazelnuts, hick- \ ory nuts, macadamia C nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts. 1 ,0 If someone's allergic to / nuts, strict avoidance is usually the best policy. Check labels closely—nuts and nut by-products can be found in a wide range of foods. So, what about nutmeg? Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is a spice that grows (as a seed) on the nutmeg tree (a tropical evergreen tree). Re- ports of allergic reactions to nut- meg are rare and don't appear to be related to nut allergies. Nutmeg, however, can be hallucinogenic/ toxic in large doses (> 1 gm). Ask your guest if she's aware of being allergic to nutmeg (unlikely). She may want to consult an allergist. — Barbara Beznos, Registered Dietitian Key JN Phone Numbers: Candlelighting Friday, Jan. 5, 4:56 p.m. Shabbat Ends Saturday, Jan. 6, 6:02 p.m. Candlelighting Friday, Jan. 12, 5:03 p.m. Shabbat Ends Saturday, Jan. 13, 6:09 p.m. Direct Your Question s For Barb And counselinif Inquiries To: Switchboard: (248) 354-6060 General News: (248) 351-5144 Business News: (248) 351-5148 Arts News: (248) 351-5142 Circulation: (248) 351-5174 Retail Ads: (248) 351-5151 Classified Ads: (248) 351-5100 MI/ A GENERAL EXCELLENCE Integrated Nutrition, LLC, 32401 Northwestern Hwy.
