Teddy Kollek Dies

Jerusalem's ex-mayor
Teddy Kollek died Jan. 2 at age 95.
Kollek served for 28 years as the
head of Israel's capital. Theodor
Kollek was born
in Austria and
moved to prestate
Palestine in 1935.
During World War
II, he served as an
intelligence asset
for Allied forces,
Teddy Kollek
a job that would
prepare him for
his next one: liaison for the fledgling
State of Israel's Haganah militia in the
United States.
After Israel's founding, Kollek ran
the office of Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion. He became Jerusalem's
mayor in 1965; and when eastern
areas of the city were liberated in the
Six-Day War two years later, worked to
bring Jewish and Arab residents closer.
Kollek was voted out of City Hall in
1993 and replaced by Ehud Olmert,
now Israel's prime minister. Kollek was
married and had two children.

Gibson Harassment

Los Angeles/JTA A police officer
who arrested Mel Gibson for drunk
driving said he is being harassed dur-
ing a leak inquiry. Deputy James Mee's
attorney said last week that following
the July incident, Mee was suddenly
transferred to another beat and that
his work is being unfairly scrutinized
by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Office as it
probes who leaked Mee's arrest report.
The office initially said Gibson had
been arrested without incident, but
Mee's report, which was leaked to
TMZ.com, indicated that the actor
was belligerent and made anti-Semitic
comments when stopped.
The office interrogated Mee for
three hours and searched his house,
confiscating his computer and phone
records, attorney Richard Shinee said.

Jews Sue Deniers

Antwerp/JTA The Forum of Jewish
Organizations in Antwerp has filed suit
against participants in last month's
Holocaust-denial conference in Tehran.
The Belgian lawsuit includes anyone
who gave a speech questioning the
Holocaust at the conference sponsored
by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Matisyahu had the No. 2 reggae album
in 2006.

Billboard reported that the New
Yorker's Live at Stubb's was second only
to Sean Paul's The Trinity. Matisyahu
also ranked second and third in the
Billboard reggae singles chart with
"King Without a Crown" and "Youth':
behind Sean Paul's "Temperature."

Kosher Internet

Jerusalem/JTA —Orthodox Jews have
secured a "kosher" Internet in Israel.
Yediot Achronot reported that
the Rabbinical Committee for
Communications Affairs and Bezeq,
Israel's main telephone company, have
reached a deal on providing separate
Internet servers for Orthodox subscrib-
ers. The servers will ensure that por-
nography is kept out and that users can
only access approved religious sites.

Al Qaida Blasts Abbas
Ramallah/JTA Al Qaida censured
Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas for his willingness to
make peace with Israel.
"Those who have sold Palestine,
the secular traitors, cannot be your
brothers," Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama
bin Laden's top lieutenant, said in an
address to Palestinians posted on an
Islamist Web site over the weekend. "Do
not recognize their legitimacy."
He appeared to be referring to the
recent power struggle in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip between Abbas' Fatah
faction and the governing Hamas.
The Egyptian-born Zawahiri also
dismissed as a "traitor" Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak, who
has played a central role in Israeli-
Palestinian rapprochement efforts.

Exchange OK'd?
Gaza City/JTA Hamas has reported-
ly accepted an Israeli offer to exchange
Palestinian prisoners for a kidnapped
Israeli soldier.
Ha'Aretz quoted Palestinian sources
Tuesday as saying that Hamas approved
a swap of 450 Palestinian prisoners
in exchange for Cpl. Gilad Shalit. This
would occur after a video proving
Shalit's well-being would be traded for
a smaller number of Palestinian pris-
oners.
The source added that Israel had not
yet agreed to Hamas' list of prisoners,
which included senior Hamas terrorists
and Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti,
who is serving consecutive life sentenc-
es for his involvement in lethal terrorist
attacks.
Shalit, 20, was abducted by Hamas
gunmen in a June 25 cross-border raid.
Israel denied knowledge of any deal.
